Designated as
part of the Dadohae
Maritime National
Park, Hongdo Island
is an ecological
treasure house,
and the natural
habitat of approximately
270 types of plants
and 170 species
of animals. Since
the entire island
is designated as
a natural monument,
taking a single
clump of grass or
stone is prohibited
by law. There are
two possible reasons
for the name Hongdo,
or “Red Island.”
One reason may be
the island’s reddish
brown-colored earth
and rocks and the
other is that the
whole island takes
on a reddish hue
at sunset.
The island is long
and narrow with
the center even
narrower than the
rest, resembling
the slender waist
of an ant. Inhabitants
reside either in
Hongdo 1-gu (the
waistline part of
the island), or
in Hongdo 2-gu,
which is located
in the northern
part of the island
(See map). Because
transportation to
Hongdo 2-gu is rather
limited, tourists
generally prefer
to stay in Hongdo
1-gu where the wharf
and most minbak
(home stay) accommodations
